About Extended Warranties
Understand how extended warranties work, how they differ from other cover, and your consumer rights.
What is an extended warranty?
An extended warranty provides additional protection against certain mechanical or electrical repair costs after, or alongside, other warranty rights that may apply. The exact cover, exclusions, claim limits and conditions depend on the product. Always read the applicable warranty documentation before purchasing.
Is an extended warranty the same as a manufacturer's warranty?
No. A manufacturer's warranty is provided by the vehicle manufacturer and applies under its own terms. An aftermarket extended warranty is a separate product provided by another warranty provider. Only the vehicle manufacturer can extend its own manufacturer's warranty.
Is an extended warranty insurance?
Not necessarily. Some extended warranties are structured as discretionary risk products rather than insurance policies. The product documentation explains how the warranty operates, how claims are considered and who provides the product.
Are extended warranties worth it?
They can be, but they are not necessarily right for everyone. Value depends on your vehicle, its age and kilometres, the level of cover available, the cost, how long you intend to keep the vehicle and how comfortable you are paying for an unexpected repair yourself.
Does buying an extended warranty affect my Australian Consumer Law rights?
No. Purchasing an extended warranty does not remove or replace any rights you may have under the Australian Consumer Law. Consumer guarantees and contractual warranty cover are separate.
